Wise County Jail Roster
The current Wise County inmate records source is the Wise County Jail list, an official public list titled for inmates in the Wise County Jail and sorted by days incarcerated. It is maintained for the jail operated by the Wise County Sheriff's Office, led by Sheriff Cary Mellema. The list reviewed on June 30, 2026 said it was current as of 1:01 PM and would normally update in about 4.5 hours. It showed 206 total inmates, 95 people held more than 100 days, 48 people held fewer than 30 days, and a median stay of 89 days.
Those figures matter because the Wise County jail roster is a current population list, not a full booking-profile system. The public roster gives a name and days in jail. It does not show mugshots, charges, bond, booking number, housing unit, arresting agency, court date, or release date in the inspected output. For that reason, a person missing from the Wise County inmate records list may be newly booked, released, transferred, held under another system, or simply not yet reflected by the next update.
The roster screenshot below comes from the county's public list at wisecounty.com/php/JailData/Auto/WCSOJailList.php and shows why browser find is needed instead of a portal search form.
The image reflects the main limitation of the Wise County jail roster: the list is useful for custody confirmation and length of stay, but deeper booking records require the jail, court, or open-records channels.
Use Wise County Browser Find
The public Wise County jail roster has no visible search box. A practical search starts by opening the roster and using the browser's own find command. On most desktop browsers, that means pressing Ctrl+F on Windows or Command+F on Mac. On a phone, use the browser menu and choose the find-on-page option. Search by last name first because names appear in last-name-first order when middle names or suffixes are present.
- Open the Wise County current jail list in a browser that can search within the page.
- Use browser find and enter the last name. If the surname is common, add a first name or scroll through nearby matches.
- Read the days-in-jail value next to the name. Treat it as custody duration, not a booking date or charge entry.
- Check the roster's update time. A very recent arrest may need the next update cycle before it appears.
- If no match appears, call detention at 940-627-5971, check VINELink, search court records, or submit a sheriff open records request.
A days-in-jail number can help distinguish a new arrest from a long-stay case, but it does not show the reason for custody. Court charges may be filed later, amended by a prosecutor, or split across more than one case. For formal charges after booking, the court record is the better source. For photos, use the separate Wise County jail mugshots discussion because the current list reviewed did not display booking images.
Wise County Roster Fields
The Wise County inmate records search-field table is unusual because the county page is a static roster, not a form. That means no field is required, no search button is present, and no filters were observed. The page is already sorted by days incarcerated, so a name search depends on the reader's browser rather than a county search engine.
| Field Label | Type | Required | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| No visible search field | Static list | Not applicable | Use browser find. The roster is sorted by days incarcerated, not by name. |
| Name / Days in Jail | List column | Not applicable | Names appear as last name, first and middle or suffix when available, with a days-in-jail value. |
| Source Info Here | Link or text label | Not applicable | A source-info label appeared on the roster page, but no search fields or options were visible in text inspection. |
No login, registration, payment, pagination, export tool, search tab, or sort control was observed. The Wise County jail roster is free to view. The tradeoff is that a person seeking a booking number, bond, charges, or housing location must use a second channel after confirming that the person appears on the current list.
Wise County Record Inventory
Wise County inmate records available on the public list are thin by design. The list confirms current custody and length of stay, but it is not the same as a jail management profile. The county's detention page says the inmate booking number can be obtained by calling 940-627-5971, which is important for deposits and for more precise records requests. The table below separates what the public list showed from fields that were absent in the inspected roster.
| Field | What It Shows |
|---|---|
| Name | Visible on the Wise County current jail list, generally in last-name-first format. |
| Days in jail | Visible as an integer count. It measures custody duration, not a charge or booking timestamp. |
| Booking number | Not shown on the public list. The detention page says to call the jail to obtain it. |
| Charges and bond | Not shown on the public list. Use court records, bond information, or the jail phone line. |
| Mugshot | Not shown on the public list reviewed. A booking photo may require a records request. |
| Housing or classification | Not shown on the public roster, though visitation blocks use local groups such as special watch, trustee, and maximum/medium males. |
| Roster statistics | Visible at page level: total inmates, over-100-day count, under-30-day count, and median days. |
Booking and intake still occur even though the public list is brief. After an arrest in Wise County, jail intake normally includes identity checks, property inventory, medical screening, fingerprints, a booking photo, a booking number, and classification for housing. Those internal steps do not mean each field is published online. Public access depends on the roster design, the open-records process, court records, and the limits of Texas public information law.
Wise County Access Channels
The best channel depends on where the person is in the custody path. The county list is the starting point for current local custody at the Wise County Jail / Wise County Detention Center. If the person has just been arrested, call before assuming the list is complete. If the person has been sentenced to state prison, transferred to federal custody, or detained for immigration reasons, the county roster may no longer be the correct tool.
| Custody or Need | Use This Channel | What It Can Do |
|---|---|---|
| Current Wise County jail custody | Wise County jail list | Shows name and days in jail for people on the current public roster. |
| Booking number or fresh arrest | Jail phone, 940-627-5971 | Confirms custody details that may not yet be on the roster. |
| Records not online | Sheriff Open Records or Smartsheet request form | Routes public information requests by email, in person, USPS mail, or online form. |
| Sentenced Texas prison custody | TDCJ inmate search | Searches sentenced state prisoners by name, TDCJ number, or SID number. |
| Federal custody | BOP inmate locator | Searches BOP custody, mainly sentenced federal inmates, and does not publish mugshots. |
| Immigration detention | ICE detainee locator | Searches immigration custody by A-number or biographic data, subject to ICE limits. |
| Custody notification | VINELink | Provides notification and custody-status tools where Texas agency data is available. |
No official sheriff app: The Wise County Sheriff's Office pages reviewed did not advertise an official mobile app, app-only roster, or app-only warrant search.
Wise County Jail Contact
The main Wise County inmate records contact is the jail in Decatur. The Wise County Detention page uses the same address for the jail and inmate mail, and the sheriff directory names Joseph Thomas as Jail Administrator. Use the jail phone for booking-number questions, custody questions, and current local directions before visiting.
Wise County Jail / Wise County Detention Center

Operator: Wise County Sheriff's Office
Sheriff: Cary Mellema
Jail Administrator: Joseph Thomas
For a written public information request, use Open_Records@sheriff.co.wise.tx.us, the Smartsheet form, USPS mail, or an in-person request through the sheriff's open records process. The county page says records are processed in the order received and that Texas law allows 10 working days to request an Attorney General opinion when an office seeks to withhold information.
Wise County Booking Timeline
A Wise County arrest may be made by sheriff's deputies, a city police department, DPS, or another law-enforcement agency. The arrested person is then taken to the Wise County Jail for intake. Intake normally includes identity confirmation, search, property inventory, medical review, fingerprints, booking photo, booking number, and classification. The public list may lag behind those steps because the roster reviewed gave a normal update interval instead of real-time profile posting.
Bond and holds can also affect a custody search. Texas bail is governed by Chapter 17 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, and Wise County links a bond information page from the detention menu, though the link did not reliably load during research. If the roster shows a person but release has not happened after bond, ask the jail about court no-bond orders, other-county warrants, parole holds, federal holds, or ICE detainers. A bond on one case does not clear every possible hold.
- Booking
- Jail intake after arrest, including identity, property, photo, fingerprints, and record entry.
- Detainer
- A request from another agency asking the jail to hold or notify before release.
- PR bond
- A personal bond that allows release on written promise and court conditions.
- Classification
- The jail's internal placement decision for housing, watch level, and visit grouping.
Wise County Visitation Schedule
Wise County visitation is organized by housing group, not one open block for all inmates. The county visitation page says visits are 20 minutes. Visitors from outside a 100-mile radius may receive a 40-minute extended visit under normal circumstances if they provide proof of residence. Visitors must be on the inmate's visitation card, bring proper picture identification if age 17 or older, and sign in at least 30 minutes before the scheduled visitation time ends.
| Day / Block | Time | Housing Group |
|---|---|---|
| Tuesday morning | 8 to 9 a.m. | Special Watch Males |
| Tuesday morning | 9 to 10:30 a.m. | Females GP |

| Saturday evening | 5 to 6 p.m. | Trustee Females |

Do not bring cell phones, cameras, purses, diaper bags, or packages into the visitation room. The jail can deny or end a visit for safety, security, dress code, or lobby conduct. Former inmates may not visit until 45 days have passed, and special visits must be approved in writing by the Jail Administrator or designee.
Wise County Mail and Funds
Mail should be addressed to the inmate by name at Wise County Jail, 200 Rook Ramsey Drive, Decatur, TX 76234. The law library page states newspapers and magazine subscriptions must come straight from the publisher and be addressed to the inmate by name. Books, magazines, or newspapers brought by individuals are not accepted, and publications with obscene or graphic sexual content are barred.
Correct Solutions Group handles phone accounts and money deposits. The county lists 877-618-3516 for the vendor, facility number 24080, and a 24-hour jail lobby kiosk for deposits. The inmate booking number is required for deposits, and the detention page says that number can be obtained by calling 940-627-5971. At release, remaining account money is issued in debit-card form. If an inmate is transferred, funds move with the inmate and personal property must be picked up within 60 days or it can be destroyed.
Note: Confirm custody with the jail before sending money, because a transfer can change the correct deposit system.
